Remember also there are consultant firms like the one referenced in this article.

There are also smaller evaluative organizations but once again you must ascertain if they are on the up and up.  Do your research on the researchers.  Attaching this Vox  article http://www.vox.com/2015/12/1/9826838/giving-tuesday-holiday-charity.  I can not attest to the validity of the groups referenced in these article, but it will widen your horizons a bit.

On a personal level, I have my favorites.  The PBS stations I watch, the NPR stations I listen to, organizations that I have a personal involvement in or know who is the captain of the ship.  I also love to give to nephews getting their heads shaved, nieces cutting off their locks, a neighborhood child doing a fundraiser for their school….etc. etc.  Supporting folks actually putting some people hours into something to raise awareness or funds is personal and a nice way to support the cause and the participant.

Enjoy and learn from your figuring out how to donate adventure!
